Postpartum Recovery: Listening to Your Body and Heart

When we think of birth, most of the focus is on the big day: the contractions, the pushing, the arrival of the baby. But what many don’t realize is that birth doesn’t end once the baby is born. It’s only the beginning of another deeply important chapter—postpartum recovery.
This stage is often called the fourth trimester, and just like pregnancy and labor, it deserves patience, care, and attention. Too often, new mothers and birthing people are expected to “bounce back” quickly, but true healing takes time.

The Physical Side of HealingYour body has just done something extraordinary. Whether your birth was vaginal or via cesarean, your body needs rest and gentleness to repair.
  • Rest as a priority – In many cultures, mothers are given 40 days or more of dedicated rest after birth. While modern life may not always allow this, carving out intentional time to slow down is key.
  • Nourishing foods – Warm, nutrient-dense meals like soups, stews, and teas help replenish energy and support healing. Think of it as rebuilding your reserves.
  • Gentle movement – When your provider gives the go-ahead, light walking or stretching supports circulation and improves mood. No rush—let your body guide you.
  • Hydration – Staying hydrated aids recovery and supports breastfeeding if you choose to nurse.

The Emotional Side of HealingPostpartum recovery isn’t just about the body—it’s also about the heart and mind. Hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and the enormous responsibility of caring for a newborn can feel overwhelming.
  • Give yourself grace – You don’t have to have it all figured out. It’s okay to learn as you go.
  • Talk about your experience – Sharing your birth story with a trusted friend, partner, or doula can help you process the emotions tied to your journey.
  • Normalize the ups and downs – Some days you’ll feel joyful, and others, you might feel exhausted or even sad. All of these feelings are valid.
  • Seek support when needed – If sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm feel heavy or persistent, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Postpartum depression and anxiety are more common than many realize, and support is available.

The Power of CommunityYou don’t have to go through postpartum alone. Surrounding yourself with a supportive circle—whether that’s family, friends, or a doula—can make a world of difference. Even something as simple as a meal drop-off or someone holding the baby while you nap can feel life-giving.
Postpartum care should be a community effort, not a solitary one. Asking for help is not a burden; it’s a bridge to healing.

A Season of BecomingPostpartum is not about “getting back to normal.” It’s about stepping into a new normal—one that honors your growth, your body’s wisdom, and your evolving identity as a parent.
Healing doesn’t follow a clock. It’s not about rushing to bounce back, but about listening—to your body, to your heart, and to what you need in this sacred season.
So, to every new mother or birthing person: be gentle with yourself. You’ve just done something extraordinary. Your healing matters just as much as your baby’s arrival.

If you’re preparing for postpartum or already in it, I’d love to walk alongside you. Explore my doula services, postpartum care options, and resources at lemonlifedoula.com.

What Positive Birth Corner Really Means: My Birth Philosophy

Turning Legacy and Lived Experience into Sacred, Empowered Birth Work
If you’ve read my story, you know my great-grandmother was a birth midwife who supported women with wisdom, calm, and deep respect for the process of bringing life into the world. That legacy planted a seed in me—one that has grown through my own journey as a Black immigrant mom, my positive hospital birth, and over a decade of supporting families in their own birth experiences.

Positive Birth Corner was born from two things:
  1. The legacy of the women who came before me.
  2. My own lived experience that showed me birth could be not only safe, but also joyful, sacred, and empowering.
My mission is simple: to help families reclaim birth as their own—on their terms, with informed choices, strong support, and a sense of deep trust in their bodies.

Why “Positive Birth Corner”?Birth is not one-size-fits-all. It can be intense, unpredictable, and emotional—but that doesn’t mean it can’t be positive. A positive birth doesn’t mean perfect. It means feeling informed, respected, and supported in whatever choices you make.
Positive Birth Corner is that safe space—the “corner” where your voice is heard, your questions are answered, and your experience matters.

My Birth PhilosophyOver the years, through training, personal experience, and walking alongside countless families, I’ve built my approach around four core beliefs:
  1. Birth Is Sacred
Whether in a hospital, at home, or in a birth center—with or without interventions—birth is a rite of passage. It deserves respect, not fear.
  2. Education Brings Confidence
I believe in giving families the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to make informed choices. When you understand your options, you step into birth feeling empowered instead of uncertain.
  3. Your Voice Matters
No one should feel ignored or dismissed in one of life’s most vulnerable moments. I am there as an advocate, a steady presence, and a reminder that you have a right to be heard.

  4. It Takes a Team
Your birth team—your doula, your provider, your partner—can shape your entire birth experience. The right team will honor your vision and walk beside you every step of the way.

Your Birth, Your Way
Positive Birth Corner is here for you whether you’re planning, preparing, birthing, or healing. Through my doula services, childbirth classes, and the Positive Birth Podcast, I create spaces where families feel supported, informed, and ready to meet birth with confidence.
If you’re ready to create a sacred, empowered birth experience, I would be honored to walk with you.

How My Great-Grandmother Inspired Me to Become a Doula

A Journey of Legacy, Empowerment, and Reclaiming Birth as Sacred

I was born and raised in Malawi, Africa. Growing up, I was surrounded by the strength, resilience, and wisdom of African women—though I didn’t yet realize how deeply that would shape my life’s work.
There’s a saying I love: “You don’t find your calling—it finds you.”
For me, that calling traveled across generations, tucked inside stories, traditions, and the quiet strength of the women who came before me.
I didn’t always know I’d become a birth worker. In my younger years, I saw birth as something purely clinical—painful, unpredictable, and stripped of its power. But something deep within me always questioned that view. And later, I learned why.
A Hidden Story in My Family Tree
When I began exploring birthwork, I discovered something extraordinary: my great-grandmother was a birth midwife in her village.
She had no formal certifications or hospital training, but she carried a lifetime of wisdom, reverence for birth, and the ability to create calm in the most intense moments. Women trusted her—leaned on her—not just for safe deliveries, but for strength, reassurance, and sacred presence.
Without knowing it, she passed that legacy down to me.

A Birth That Changed Everything
Years later, as a Black immigrant mom, I experienced my own birth in a hospital—and it was positive, empowering, and affirming. That moment was significant for me, because I knew not everyone shared that experience. I felt a deep conviction to help change that.
That’s why I created Positive Birth Corner—a space to reclaim birth as a sacred, informed, and confident experience for every family, no matter where or how they birth.
And as the host of the Positive Birth Podcast, I share stories, tools, and truths that empower parents to approach birth with strength and joy instead of fear.

When Purpose Meets Legacy
When I supported my first birth as a doula more than a decade ago, I felt my great-grandmother’s presence with me—steady, calm, and quietly confident.
This isn’t just a career for me. It’s a mission. It’s ancestral. It’s deeply personal.
Every time I walk into a birth space, I carry her spirit, my own lived experience, and years of supporting families through every kind of birth journey.

Full Circle
I may never have met my great-grandmother, but I honor her legacy every day—through the families I serve, the parents I educate, and the sacred spaces I help create.
Being a doula is not just what I do. It’s who I am.
If you’re expecting, planning, healing, or simply curious—know this:
You are powerful.
You are capable.
You are not alone.
